student protests in Serbia

If someone told me several months ago that the first thing I’d publish in 2025 would be about students, or events in Serbia, I would not have believed it. Yet here we are. And, just so I am not misunderstood, I am glad this is so.

In the briefest possible terms, students in Serbia have, for more than two months now, been at the forefront of nationwide protests.

As it happens, the international media is yet to properly catch up with what is happening there. Although to be fair, even many people in the country struggle to keep up with the events. But the good news is: students are not alone in their fight for justice, as each day more and more citizens are joining them in solidarity.

Here are my two texts, in which I am describing what is happening in Serbia now and why it is important:

Inside the student blockades in Serbia, published on Wonhke (28 January 2025)

and a shorter and slightly updated version of the story:

Student-led protests: Part of a broader fight for justice, published on University World News (31 January 2025)
